Aluminum Strips Used in Voice Tube

Aluminum strips had a surprising usage which is not well-known any more. They used to be placed in the voice tube as voice collectors. Each voice tube had one piece aluminum strip that was about 10 centimeters long, 3 centimeters wide and from 2um to 5um thick. The strip had almost no inner mechanical stress after going through annealing treatment. While it was placed in strong magnetic fields of a voice tube, it produced slight electricity current that was magnified and then transferred into sound. It took place of the small copper bar that was much more expensive.

Aluminum strips had been chosen as voice collector of voice tubes because of their perfect voice collecting effect. A small piece of strip in a microphone could collect sounds from all directions. The collected sounds, after being transformed, were temperate, real and comfortable. Even if it collected extremely loud sounds, there would be no problem like voice distortion. Therefore, microphones with aluminum strips were popular for chorus collecting.
However, weaknesses of aluminum strips for voice tubes were as obvious as their strengths. Their were only around 5um thick and needed more care in usage and maintenance. Even a blow of breath might break them, so it was important to keep them away from wind. Besides, they may be damaged by moisture. These weaknesses restricted their development as voice collects. With popularity of voice tubes that withstands shocks, falls and water, aluminum stripswere discarded eventually by microphone manufacturers.
