Mirror Finish Aluminum Sheet Polishing Methods
At present, there are two polishing methods for production of the mirror finish aluminum sheet: chemical polishing and mechanical polishing.
Chemical polishing is a method of eliminating abrasion marks and leveling by selective dissolution of rough areas on the surface of an aluminum sheet by chemical reagents. The basic principle of chemical polishing is that the electrochemical potentials of the constituent phases on the surface of the metal sample are different, resulting in many micro-potentials, which can cause uneven dissolution in the chemical solution. During the dissolution process, a layer of oxide film will be formed on the surface of the sheet. The dissolution and expansion speed of the dissolution on bulging part of the sheet surface is slow due to the thin mucous film. As a result, the polished surface is smooth with small fluctuating waveforms, which can not meet the very ideal requirements. When observed with a microscope at low and medium magnification, this small fluctuation is generally within the objective’s ability to distinguish vertically, and very clear tissues can still be observed.
The principle of mechanical polishing for the mirror finish aluminum sheet is simpler. The engine drives the grinding disc to rotate. There is a strong friction between the disc and the aluminum sheet that rotates on the disc. The cutting force is generated by friction, and the uneven surface of the sheet is smoothed to achieve the polishing purpose. Mechanical finishing enables a sheet to obtain a polishing finish as high as about 0.002 mm, which proves to be higher than that of chemical polishing. Besides, chemical polishing brings about environmental pollution.
