Are lamp covers made of 1xxx or 3xxx aluminum circle blanks
As known to all, 1xxx and 3xxx are the most popular of aluminum circle blanks. These are further made into cookware, lamp covers and other products needing deep drawing or spinning before coming into being. Which alloys, then, are suitable as lamp cover materials?
The most frequently applied aluminum circles of 1000 series proves to be 1050, which can be substituted by 1060 in case of material shortage, for the two share equivalent properties. 1050 incorporates 99.% aluminium and 0.5% other metals. Owing to high content of aluminium, 1050 is known as a member of pure industrial aluminium group, characterized by low hardness, high plasticity and excellent elongation. Generally speaking, low strength of aluminium alloys accompanies good tensile strength and elongation, necessary conditions for deep drawing and spinning. That’s why 1050, 1060, 1070 and 1100 aluminium grades rank top in aluminium discs blank products. They have the best plasticity. In comparison with 3xxx circles, they have poorer corrosion resistance, but still prove to be a widely applied aluminum circle for lamp cover.
3xxx aluminum circle blanks are stronger in both hardness and corrosion resistance. The representative is 3003 DC aluminum disc. 3003 is harder and more erosion resistant because it contains an alloy metal of manganese. The 1.0% to 1.5% manganese greatly improves mechanical and chemical properties of 3003. This can be used in lamp covers, too, but in those requiring higher weather resistance and longer service life. Sometime 3xxx aluminium wafers are anodized to obtain better surface quality, but their anodizing effect is not so good as 5xxx circles like 5052.
To sum up, both 1xxx and 3xxx aluminium discs blank can be applied in lamp covers, but the latter has better performances. Purchasers can choose suitable alloys based on their actual needs.
